Ginseng has been used for hundreds of years by many different cultures as a herbal remedy for all sorts of conditions.

In some cultures, ginseng is thought to be a cure-all… and some think of it as an aphrodisiac. While it is true that it can be, it isn’t as simple as some may be led to believe.  Ginseng is an herb that acts on the hormones of the body… regulating them in both men and women. It stimulates the body and gives it energy… the combination of these two actions is what makes people think it is an aphrodisiac. When a person’s hormones are balanced properly, they are healthier, and they get a healthier sexual appetite. With the increased energy you get from ginseng it is not uncommon for ginseng to cause an increase in sexual activity in both sexes.

Ginseng is considered the herb to take for physical and mental stamina as well as health. It will help the body build a stronger resistance to stress, and this can also contribute to a healthier sex life.  Ginseng is also well known to prevent impotency, and it can reverse problems with impotency as well. This is also a side effect of improving your general health, balancing your hormone levels, reducing stress and improving your energy. Improved sexual performance is almost always the case when all these other areas are healed.

Ginseng can also help regulate blood pressure and blood sugar, which can improve overall heart health. By keeping these areas in check, it may be easier to maintain a healthy weight. It is generally believed to slow the aging process as well.  Often used in conjunction with other herbs for energy and stamina, ginseng may be mixed with cayenne and gotu kola, for example. This combination is considered to be an herbal ‘pick me up’.  Ginseng is commonly added to tea or other commercial “energy drinks”, but more often than not, this is merely a marketing tactic than the creation of an actually useful product. They don’t usually add enough ginseng to do any good.

There are several species of ginseng: American ginseng, Asian ginseng, and Siberian ginseng are the most commonly found varieties. Each have small differences from the others, as well as differences in flavor. Some will taste terrible when added to a drink.  The most commonly used form of ginseng for medicinal purposes is the Siberian ginseng.
