Learn about Sinusitis and what herbs can be used to help this condition.

When a sinus infection hits you, it can stay for weeks and cause not only physical symptoms, but emotional stress. Confronted with a flood of over the counter medications, many people are choosing herbal remedies to treat sinusitis.

Sinusitis is more than just a runny nose and headache that won’t go away. When it strikes, your whole body is tired and it seems like a common cold that you can’t get rid of. In all reality, your sinuses are in desperate need of an herbal remedy to repair the damage being inflicted to your body and set you on the right path to wellness and recovery.  Statistics gathered from the National Center for Health Statistics says that sinusitis is one of the single most common disorder affecting Americans today. Herbal remedies offer people the ability to treat the symptoms, including congestion, headaches, and pressure in the head.  Sinusitis is unlike a viral or bacterial infection, sinusitis just means that your sinuses are inflamed. Certain herbs can help stimulate the sinuses to return to a normal state quicker, this is a big bonus since many sinus infections last for three months or longer.

Generally doctors will prescribe antibiotics, but they are not able to prevent a recurring attack. In general antibiotics tend to compromise the amount of good bacteria living in your sinuses which help ward off infection. Certain herbs, on the other hand, stimulate a natural balance in your body and allow it to get healthier and fight off infection for good.  The best way of beating and keeping sinus infections at bay is to get your immune system healthy and keep it that way. Echinacea is one of the most effective and well known herbal immune booster that helps with inflammation and protects your mucus membranes from being infected by infectious bacteria. A single capsule of 150-300 mg or one teaspoon of Echinacea extract mixed with one cup of water is enough to treat your sinusitis.

Another natural herbal remedy is Goldenseal, which is used to treat sinus infections. It has immune boosting properties can help with the flow of mucus from the body, which helps your body get rid of toxins. Goldenseal treatment normally starts with a 250-500 mg capsule or one teaspoon of Goldenseal extract combined with one cup of water.  Two other herbs used to treat sinus infections are nettle and licorice. When using Nettle or Licorice the same doses as in Goldenseal treatments is recommended. No matter which of these herbs you use to treat your sinus infection, make sure that you take every available precaution to boost and strengthen your immune system so that your body has the ability to fight off infection the next time it’s faced with an invading bacterial infection.
